He climbed in the car after Tuesday choir and immediately said his voice cracked twice in the same song. He said it like a confession, because the other kids in his section laughed when it happened the second time. The director told him it was normal, but he doesn’t believe her, and right now he’s telling you he’s never opening his mouth in choir again.
Welcome to adolescent voice change, probably the most awkward two years of a young singer’s life. Here’s what’s actually happening to his voice and what to do about it.
What voice change actually is
Voice change is the biological process where a kid’s larynx grows during puberty and the vocal folds get longer and thicker, which drops the pitch of his speaking and singing voice. For boys, the change is dramatic, the speaking voice can drop a full octave over the course of a year, the singing voice goes through a period where it’s unreliable, high notes crack, low notes don’t have weight yet, and some kids lose the ability to sing certain pitches entirely for a few months.
For girls, the change is real but less obvious. The speaking voice drops slightly, the singing voice gets fuller in the bottom range, and sometimes the top notes become less reliable for a short window. Most kids go through this between eleven and fourteen, some earlier, some later, with the whole change taking twelve to twenty-four months to complete.
What this means for choir
A good choir director knows what to do. Boys who were singing in the treble section (soprano or alto) might move to a temporary “cambiata” section, which is a middle range built for changing voices, and after a few months they might move again to tenor, baritone, or bass. The shifting is normal and expected. Girls who were singing soprano might find they can’t sustain the high range and move to alto temporarily, and after the change settles they often move back to soprano if that’s their natural fach.
The director will assign voice parts based on what she hears, not what your kid sang last year. Your kid might be in three different sections in three different concerts. That’s fine.
What you might see at home
He’ll sing in the shower, but only in certain ranges, he’s exploring where the voice still works. He’ll avoid singing in front of people, because the fear of cracking is real and social. He might cough or clear his throat more often as the larynx grows and inflammation increases. He’ll speak in a deeper voice some days and higher on others as the voice is unsettled and he’s figuring out where it lives. All of this is normal and none of it is a sign of anything to worry about.
What helps
Water. The vocal folds need hydration, and a kid drinking enough through the day has fewer issues with cracks and dry throat. Sleep, because the voice depends on the body being rested and a tired thirteen-year-old sings worse than a rested one. A real warm-up, choir teachers usually warm up at the start of class, but if he’s also doing solo work or auditioning, encourage him to spend five minutes warming up at home before he sings alone. And patience. The voice will settle. It always does. Just not on a schedule he can predict.
What doesn’t help
Forcing range, pushing a high note when the voice isn’t ready cracks it more, and it’s better to let him sing where he can sing. Voice lessons that ignore the voice change, most strong voice teachers know how to teach through it, but a few don’t, and if he’s in lessons and not progressing or coming home frustrated, ask the teacher how she handles voice change. The answer should be specific. Comparing him to other kids who change earlier or later, end up with bigger or smaller adult voices, or anything else, the voice he has at twelve is not the voice he’ll have at seventeen.
The audition season problem
Voice change can happen right in the middle of audition season for all-state choir, show choir, or musical theater. This is brutal for the kid. Two pieces of advice. If the change is in full swing and the audition is for a serious selective ensemble, sometimes the right move is to skip this year and audition next year. Not always. Sometimes the right move is to audition anyway and let the panel hear where the voice is, they’ve seen kids in voice change and they know what to listen for.
If the audition includes a range test that goes above where he can comfortably sing, talk to the choir director. They’ll sometimes shift the audition material to a key that works. Sometimes not. Either way, the conversation is worth having.
When the change is harder than it should be
Most kids go through voice change without medical concerns. A few don’t. Signs to watch for: hoarseness that lasts more than two weeks without a cold, pain when speaking or singing, a breathy quality that doesn’t go away after the change settles, loss of upper range that lasts beyond age fifteen for a kid who used to sing high. These can sometimes indicate vocal nodules or other voice issues that benefit from seeing a voice-specialist ENT. This is rare, and most kids end the change with a healthier voice than they started with.
The voice that comes out the other side
Most kids who sing through voice change end up with a more powerful, expressive voice than they had as children. Boy sopranos become tenors or baritones with real range, some end up basses with bottom notes that boy sopranos can only dream of. Girls who were thin sopranos in middle school sometimes become full mezzos in high school with the kind of voice that wins all-state auditions.
The kid who sticks with singing through the awkward year is the kid who comes out with the voice that works. The kid who quits during voice change because it’s embarrassing usually doesn’t come back. Make sticking with it easier this year. The harder year is the year that pays off.
