What you actually need
Cheer shoes are not optional. They’re white, low-profile, and designed specifically for tumbling and stunting. They’re different from sneakers, the sole and ankle support are engineered for the movement. Top brands are Nfinity, Rebel, and Cheer Athletics. Make sure you buy cheer-specific shoes, not generic white sneakers.
A bow comes next. Most teams order one per season, so confirm with your coach before buying. If the team doesn’t supply it, get one in your team colors. Hair gel keeps hair in place during stunts and tumbling. Athletic tape gets used for wrists, ankles, and hair maintenance. Practice clothes are standard athletic wear, shorts, t-shirt, or sweatpants. Nothing special needed.
The team provides your competition uniform, so wait on that purchase. Trying to guess the colors, style, or fit is a waste of money.

White youth cheer shoes
Cheer-specific shoe: white, low-profile, light, with the finger grooves for stunting. The starter answer for a first season.
Our take: For a first season, a basic pair does the job. If your kid makes a competitive All-Star team, the coach will tell you which Nfinity model the team wears. Wait for that.

Jumbo cheer bows (2 pack)
Eight-inch bows on ponytail holders, multiple color options. Only buy after the coach confirms the team isn't ordering them.
Our take: Two basic bows beat one boutique bow. One lives in the cheer bag as the backup.

got2b Glued spiking gel (3 pack)
The hair gel cheer parents actually use. Holds a high pony through a full day of stunting and comes out with one wash.
Our take: Ask any cheer parent what's in their competition bag. It's this. The three-pack lasts a season.

Mueller athletic tape
Standard white athletic tape from the brand in every trainer's kit. Wrists, ankles, and a dozen sideline fixes.
Our take: One of those things you buy once and use for every sport in the house. It belongs in the sideline kit, not just the cheer bag.

Used gear notes
Used cheer shoes are fine from Facebook Marketplace or Play It Again Sports. Check the insoles for wear, heavy wear means they’re near the end of their life. Bows and tape should usually be new, though slightly used bows are acceptable if they’re clean.
What you can skip
Skip matching warm-up gear unless your team requires it. Skip expensive hair accessories, bobby pins work fine. Skip brand-name athletic wear for practice. Generic athletic shorts and shirts are fine. Skip multiple bows. One works for most of the season.
