STUNT pathway: middle school pilots through college scholarships

What good looks like in STUNT, the head-to-head sport built from cheer's technical skills. Where it starts, how it differs from cheer, and the college lane that makes it worth knowing about.

13–14

Skill milestones

· Solid cheer-skill base: confident stunting at prep and extended levels, tumbling through at least back handspring for most roster spots
· Learns the STUNT format: four quarters (partner stunts, pyramids and tosses, jumps and tumbling, team routine), with routines called from a set playbook like plays
· Executes a called routine on the whistle, synchronized with teammates, scored on execution
· Position clarity: base, backspot, or top, with the body-control demands of each understood

What good practice looks like

· Middle school STUNT exists only as pilot programs in a handful of states; most 13-14 development happens inside school or All Star cheer
· Where programs exist: two or three practices a week in a defined season (commonly spring, opposite traditional cheer)
· Practice is repetition of the standardized routine library at increasing difficulty levels
· Conditioning mirrors cheer: core, shoulders, wrists, and the strength to base safely

Social and emotional

· Athletes who found cheer's performance side draining often light up in STUNT: no crowd leading, no glitter requirement, just execution
· Head-to-head scoring means someone visibly wins each quarter; it's honest and occasionally brutal in a way cheer's judged format isn't
· Being early adopters of a new sport carries its own pride; these kids are building something

Parent decision points

· Cheer, STUNT, or both? Where seasons don't conflict (STUNT typically runs spring), both is genuinely workable and common
· No local program? Then this decision doesn't exist yet. Keep building the skill base in cheer and check the state association's sport list annually; the sanctioned-state map grows most years.
· Pitch the school? Athletic directors are adding STUNT because it's inexpensive (mats and uniforms, no flights) and Title IX-relevant. A parent group with USA Cheer's program-start materials has gotten programs launched.

· Executes the upper-level routine library: advanced partner stunts, tosses, pyramid sequences, synchronized tumbling
· Game craft develops: knowing which routines your team executes cleanest, managing the call-and-counter flow against an opponent
· Versatility pays: athletes who can fill multiple positions across quarters earn more floor time
· Consistency under head-to-head pressure: hitting the same routine on the fourth attempt of a close game

What good practice looks like

· Varsity STUNT season where sanctioned: daily practice in season, dual meets and tournaments, state series in the most established states
· Many athletes run fall cheer plus spring STUNT as a two-season year inside one skill family
· Film review is unusually useful since both teams ran the identical routine: the comparison is right there
· Strength training formalizes, especially for bases; safe basing at advanced levels is a strength sport

Social and emotional

· STUNT athletes get the varsity-letter legitimacy that cheer has fought decades for, and the difference in how schools treat the two is noticed by the athletes living it
· Roster competition is real: standardized routines make execution differences visible, so depth charts are unusually honest
· The pioneer energy continues: most programs are under five years old, and seniors leave having built the record book

Parent decision points

· College STUNT? The real headline. NCAA emerging-sport status for women plus growing rosters means scholarship and roster opportunities at a sport few families know to look for. USA Cheer maintains the college program list; check it junior year.
· STUNT or acrobatics and tumbling for college? Related but distinct sports with separate governing structures (USA Cheer for STUNT, NCATA for acro and tumbling). Skill bases overlap heavily; recruit conversations with both kinds of programs are reasonable.
· Recruiting mechanics? Direct contact, skills video, and attendance at college clinics. The sport is small enough that coaches answer emails. No services exist worth paying for.

· STUNT-specific training before a STUNT program exists to join. The skills are cheer skills; train them in the cheer and tumbling progression and they transfer whole.
· Choosing STUNT over cheer at 12 based on the college-scholarship pitch. The scholarship lane is real and growing; it's also reachable by every strong cheer athlete later. Nothing is lost by waiting.
· Private 'STUNT prep' coaching. The sport is too new for a legitimate private-training economy. Anyone selling one is early in a different way than they claim.
· Conflating STUNT with stunting. Stunting is a skill inside cheer; STUNT is a governed sport with quarters, possessions, and a scoreboard. The vocabulary collision confuses everyone, including some athletic directors.

Reframe

If your kid is "ahead" or "behind".

· Every STUNT athlete is new because the sport is new. A junior trying STUNT for the first time is on the normal timeline.
· Cheer level translates directly: a Level 3-4 All Star athlete or a solid varsity stunter has the skill base STUNT rosters want.
· Gymnasts and acro athletes convert fast; the sport rewards clean technical execution over performance polish, which suits athletes who liked the skills more than the crowd-leading.
· Because routines are standardized, improvement is unusually measurable: a team either executes the called play cleaner than the opponent or doesn't.

Where your kid is on the path

STUNT is the newest sport on this site: a head-to-head game created by USA Cheer where two teams execute the same skill routines, quarter by quarter, and get scored against each other like a sport because it is one. It starts in high school for almost everyone, with middle school pilot programs in a few states. No bands here for 5-7, 8-10, or 11-12 because STUNT genuinely doesn't exist at those ages: the feeder pathway at those ages is cheer, gymnastics, dance, and acro, all covered on their own pages.

STUNT exists because cheer’s competitive athletes deserved a format that counts as a sport everywhere sports are counted: seasons, quarters, scoreboards, varsity letters, Title IX rosters, scholarships. USA Cheer built it, the sanctioned-state list keeps growing, and the college lane is the most under-the-radar scholarship opportunity in this entire collection.

For a parent, the move is simple. Build the skill base in cheer or gymnastics through middle school, then check whether your state and your school sanction STUNT the spring she hits ninth grade. If the answer is no, ask the athletic director why not; the program costs less than the javelin budget.
