Scripts

After a win. What to say.

What to say after a win. The script that celebrates without creating expectations that backfire.

What they're feeling

  • · Excited and fired up.
  • · Proud. But watching to see if you noticed.
  • · Replaying the highlights.
  • · Maybe still thinking about the one thing that went wrong.

What to say (pick one)

  • "That was fun to watch."
  • "You played hard today."
  • "What was your favorite moment?"

Then stop talking.

What not to say

  • "You were the best one out there."
  • "See? You always do great when you try."
  • "Next week you've got to do that again."

The rule

Let the win be enough. Don't load it up with expectations for next time.

If they bring it up

  • · Keep it specific to today. Not to some future performance.
  • · If they want to talk about what went wrong, let them.
  • · Ask what they want to work on next practice, not what they need to fix.

After a win

  • · Celebrate the effort. Not just the outcome.
  • · Ask what they enjoyed, not what they dominated.
  • · Let them carry the good feeling without conditions.
