Your kid is crying after the game. What to say.

What to say when your younger kid is crying after a game. The script for the parking lot or the back seat.

What they're feeling

  • · Overwhelmed. Their body doesn't know how to hold all of it yet.
  • · Maybe embarrassed that others saw them cry.
  • · Wanting comfort, not a lesson.
  • · Needing to know you're not disappointed.

What to say (pick one)

  • "Come here."
  • "It's okay. I've got you."
  • "You don't have to talk right now."

Then stop talking.

What not to say

  • "Stop crying. It's just a game."
  • "Big kids don't cry."
  • "What are you even crying about? You played fine."

The rule

At this age, the feelings are the whole game. Don't skip past them.

If they bring it up

  • · When they calm down, ask what happened. Keep it open.
  • · Don't assume you know why they're crying. Let them tell you.
  • · Food helps. Changing location helps. Don't force the conversation.

When they cry after a game

  • · Physical comfort first. Words second.
  • · Don't explain their feelings back to them.
  • · Let them eat something and settle before any talking.
