Marching band is a varsity-level time commitment wearing an arts label. Camp in the summer heat, every Friday night at the stadium, most October Saturdays at competitions, and a rehearsal schedule that runs ten-plus hours a week in season. Families who plan for “an elective” get run over by it.

The calendar’s hinge is band camp. The whole competitive show gets installed in those one to two weeks before school, which is why directors treat attendance as non-negotiable and why the smart move is booking summer plans for June and early July.

After the November finale the same kids become a concert band, and the year quietly continues through ratings festivals, solo and ensemble, and a spring concert. The winter is lighter but not empty, and the crossover kids who do winter guard or indoor percussion never actually stop.
