Scripts

Before tryouts. What to say.

What to say in the days before tryouts. The script that keeps the anxiety manageable without pretending it doesn't exist.

What they're feeling

  • · Nervous for days before it actually happens.
  • · Comparing themselves to every kid on the team.
  • · Wanting reassurance but not sure how to ask for it.
  • · Picking up on your anxiety too.

What to say (pick one)

  • "You've done the work. Go show what you can do."
  • "Just play your game."
  • "Whatever happens, I'm going to be proud of how you competed."

Then stop talking.

What not to say

  • "You have to make this team."
  • "Just don't do what you did at the last tryout."
  • "I talked to the coach and I think you're in good shape."

The rule

Your job is to get them in the door calm. That's all.

If they bring it up

  • · If they're nervous, say nerves mean it matters. That's okay.
  • · Don't run through all the things they need to do well.
  • · Short conversations are better than long ones this week.

Before tryouts

  • · Keep the routine normal. Sleep, food, no last-minute extra training.
  • · One line of confidence. Not a pregame speech.
  • · Your energy will transfer. Stay steady.
